Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, cut into pieces
- ¼ cup water
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted. Remove from heat and add the water. Let the mixture cool until warm to the touch. Add the milk mixture, eggs, and vanilla extract to the flour mixture. Stir until the dough comes together.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the Filling: In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Roll Out and Assemble: Gently deflate the dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle about 12×20 inches. Brush the melted butter evenly on the dough, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over the top. Cut the dough into six strips and stack them. Cut the stacked strips into six squares. Arrange the squares in a greased loaf pan, loosely stacked on each other.
- Second Rise: Cover the loaf pan with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 30-45 minutes or until puffy.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 20 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For extra flavor, try adding chopped nuts or raisins to the cinnamon sugar mixture.
- Make sure your yeast is fresh for the best rise.
- To test if the bread is done, a thermometer inserted should read about 190°F (88°C).
- If the top is browning too quickly, cover it with aluminum foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
