Description
Enjoy this delicious and sweet baklava made with layers of crispy phyllo dough, chopped nuts, and a syrupy honey mixture.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package phyllo dough (about 16 oz)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups mixed nuts (such as walnuts, almonds, and pistachios), finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare the Nut Filling: In a bowl, combine the chopped nuts and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
- Assemble the Baklava: Brush a 9×13-inch baking dish with melted butter. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the baking dish and brush it with melted butter. Repeat this process with about 8 more sheets, brushing each with butter. Spread a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo layers. Add another 6 to 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter. Repeat the layering process until all the phyllo and nuts are used, finishing with about 8 layers of phyllo.
- Cut the Baklava: Using a sharp knife, cut the assembled baklava into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake: Bake the baklava in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
- Prepare the Syrup: While the baklava is baking, combine the sugar, water, honey, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and let simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Pour the Syrup: Once the baklava is done baking, immediately pour the warm syrup evenly over the hot baklava. Allow it to sit and absorb the syrup for several hours or overnight.
Notes
- Keep the phyllo dough covered with a damp cloth while assembling to prevent it from drying out.
- For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of ground cloves or cardamom to the nut mixture.
- Be sure to pour the syrup over the baklava while it’s hot to ensure proper absorption.
- Allow the baklava to sit for a few hours before serving, or overnight for the best flavor experience.
