A rich and indulgent chocolate swirl cake topped with a luscious chocolate ganache.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup milk
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup dark chocolate, chopped (for ganache)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for ganache)
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for ganache)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare:
– Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
– Grease and line a round cake pan with parchment paper. - Prepare the Batter:
– In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
– Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract. - Mix Dry Ingredients:
– In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
– Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. - Create the Swirl:
– Divide the batter in half. Stir cocoa powder into one half until fully incorporated.
– Pour the plain batter into the prepared pan.
– Drop spoonfuls of the chocolate batter onto the plain batter.
– Use a knife or skewer to swirl the two batters together gently. - Bake:
– Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
– Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. - Prepare Chocolate Ganache:
– Heat the heavy cream in a saucepan until it begins to simmer.
– Pour the hot cream over the chopped dark chocolate and butter in a bowl. Let sit for a minute to melt.
– Stir until smooth and glossy, then stir in vanilla extract.
– Allow the ganache to cool slightly until it’s thickened but still pourable. - Assemble the Cake:
– Once the cake has cooled, pour the ganache over the top, allowing it to drape over the sides.
– Use a spatula or knife to create swirls in the ganache on top of the cake.
Notes
- Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before starting for a smoother batter.
- Avoid overmixing the batter to keep the cake light and airy.
- For extra flavor, add a teaspoon of instant coffee granules to the chocolate ganache.
- Allow the ganache to set slightly before cutting for clean slices.
