- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional)
Instructions
- Slice the onions thinly using a sharp knife or mandoline for even cooking.
- Heat a wide, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-low heat and add butter and olive oil.
- Once the butter is melted, add all the onions and stir to coat them well.
- Let the onions sweat uncovered for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Continue to cook over low heat for 45–60 minutes, stirring every few minutes until deep golden brown.
- Deglaze the pan with balsamic vinegar or water to lift any browned bits and boost flavor.
- Taste and adjust with extra salt or a pinch of sugar if desired.
- Cool completely and store in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.
